eLife selects four outstanding papers, showcases early-career investigators.

The academic editors of eLife, the new open-access journal for the very best in life sciences and biomedical research, have selected four published studies to represent the breadth, quality, and importance of papers invited by the journal. Pre-tenure authors on the papers will present at the scientific meetings of eLife’s prestigious founding organisations: the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Max Planck Society, and the Wellcome Trust.

eLife Sciences is a unique collaboration between the funders and practitioners of research to enhance the communication of influential discoveries through open access, digital media, and fast, fair, and constructive review. eLife is committed to creating a positive publishing experience, particularly for early-career investigators for whom delays and punishing reviews are most costly.

Selected papers were published before May 28, 2013, cover a range of subjects, and have advanced our understanding of the influenza and hepatitis viruses, the evolution of animal cells, and the techniques we use to determine the structure of proteins. They include:

Stability-mediated epistasis constrains the evolution of an influenza protein

Lizhi Ian Gong, Marc A Suchard, Jesse D Bloom http://dx.doi.org/10.7554/eLife.00631

Ribosome structures to near-atomic resolution from thirty thousand cryo-EM particles

Xiao-chen Bai, Israel S Fernandez, Greg McMullan, Sjors HW Scheres http://dx.doi.org/10.7554/eLife.00461

A bacterial sulfonolipid triggers multicellular development in the closest living relatives of animals

Rosanna A Alegado, Laura W Brown, Shugeng Cao, Renee K Dermenjian, Richard Zuzow, Stephen R Fairclough, Jon Clardy, Nicole King http://dx.doi.org/10.7554/eLife.00013

Sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide is a functional receptor for human hepatitis B and D virus

Huan Yan, Guocai Zhong, Guangwei Xu, Wenhui He, Zhiyi Jing, Zhenchao Gao, Yi Huang, Yonghe Qi, Bo Peng, Haimin Wang, Liran Fu, Mei Song, Pan Chen, Wenqing Gao, Bijie Ren, Yinyan Sun, Tao Cai, Xiaofeng Feng, Jianhua Sui, Wenhui Li http://dx.doi.org/10.7554/eLife.00049

Authors Jesse Bloom, Wenhui Li, Rosanna Alegado, and Israel Sanchez will now be sponsored to present their work at their choice of meeting, hosted by one of eLife’s founding organisations.

“Congratulations Dr. Bloom, Dr. Li, Dr. Alegado, Dr. Sanchez, and your co-authors for having your work honoured by our colleagues in this way,” said Randy Schekman, the journal’s editor-in-chief. “You made the right choice trusting eLife with your best work.” Schekman is co-recipient of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

These sponsored presentations are just one element in eLife’s suite of initiatives to enhance the experience of publishing in a high-profile journal for early-career investigators. More details are described in today’s editorial, available at http://elife.elifesciences.org/content/2/e01633.
